SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - An independent panel found Wednesday that a disgraced surgeon's negligence led to the deaths of 13 patients at a rural Australian hospital and recommended that police investigate him for manslaughter.
The panel's final report also recommended that two senior hospital administrators be prosecuted for their roles in hiring and promoting the surgeon, Dr. Jayant Patel.
The Indian-born surgeon, who completed his residency in the state of New York, has been linked by Australian health officials to the deaths of 88 patients during his two-year tenure at the Bundaberg Base Hospital, including 13 who died allegedly as a direct result of his treatment.
