AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Olympian Pieter van den Hoogenband won the men's 200-meter freestyle at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships on Friday in his first meet back after hernia surgery in May.
Van den Hoogenband finished in a meet-record 1 minute, 46.23 seconds. Olympian Klete Keller was second at 1:47.56 and South Africa's Darian Townsend of the University of Florida was third in 1:50.50.
"I had my big breakthrough here 10 years ago, and now I'm making a new start. I thought I would make it very special," Van den Hoogenband said of his return to Auburn.
