 IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Cappie Pondexter scored a season-high 26 points to lead No. 6 Rutgers to a 76-64 victory Saturday over San Jose State in the opening round of the Hawkeye Challenge.
Many of Pondexter's baskets came just when the Scarlet Knights (4-0) needed them to turn back a Spartan surge. But her biggest was a 3-pointer, which came with 7:03 left in the game and Rutgers trailing 53-52.
With a defender in her face, Pondexter sank it deep from the right baseline, triggering a 14-2 run that shut the door on the Spartans' upset hopes.
