LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) - Separatist protesters demanding authorities release their leader shut down businesses and banks in southeastern Nigeria on Monday, and an activist said security forces opened fire on the crowd, killing three people.
The group called for members of the ethnic Igbo group to observe a two-day strike starting Monday to protest the October arrest of its leader, Ralph Uwazurike. Uwazurike was charged with treason along with six members of his group on Nov. 8.
"They were on the streets, chanting and singing and the Nigerian police descended heavily on them," said Uche Madu, a spokesman for the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra.
