The South African National Parks authority last week introduced new security measureses to combat the increased incidence of muggings ahead of the busy Christmas season. (AP Photo/Andrew Ingram/Cape Times/Trace Images) CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - South Africa is introducing round-the-clock patrols, dog units and surveillance cameras at Table Mountain to combat a spate of muggings on the slopes of the famed landmark before the busy Christmas tourism season.

There have been more than 30 reported muggings on the mountain this year. The rate has picked up dramatically in recent weeks with the start of summer, despite efforts to track down perpetrators by helicopter.

Authorities say only a few tourists were targeted. But they are painfully aware that international headlines about knifepoint robberies do little to shake off South Africa's reputation for violent crime.
