DARWIN, Australia (AP) - A jury Tuesday convicted a mechanic of murdering a British backpacker on an Outback highway in 2001 one of Australia's most sensational killings in recent years.
The jury deliberated for eight hours before convicting Bradley John Murdoch in the death of Peter Falconio, 28. He also was convicted of assaulting and abducting Falconio's girlfriend, Joanne Lees.
Murdoch, 47, was given a mandatory life sentence by Northern Territory Supreme Court Justice Brian Martin. Murdoch showed no emotion as he was sentenced, and his lawyer, Grant Algie, said he would appeal.
