WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration should release all of Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito's internal Justice Department documents before confirmation hearings begin next month, Senate Democrats said Tuesday.
The documents "will be important in evaluating Judge Alito's nomination," the eight Judiciary Committee Democrats said in a letter to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
Alito worked for the solicitor general's office in 1981-85, and also as deputy assistant U.S. attorney general from 1985-87 before becoming a federal prosecutor and judge. President Bush picked him for the Supreme Court in October.
