By BASHIRULLAH KHAN

Troops of Pakistan para-military force proceed to enforce their strength at the border town Mir Ali along the Afghanistan border, near Miran Shah in the Pakistan tribal area of North Waziristan, Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006. Assailants armed with rockets and assault rifles attacked a newly built checkpoint near the Afghan border in Pakistan before dawn Saturday, killing all eight security personnel, officials said. Hours after the attack, an air strike on a home belonging to a local Muslim cleric along the Pakistan-Afghan border, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of the checkpoint, killed eight people and wounded several others, local residents said. A tribal elder claimed U.S. helicopters had attacked, but the American military denied operating in the area.

About an hour after Saturday's blast, suspected Islamic militants raided a checkpoint 30 miles away, killing eight Pakistani security forces deployed to stop militants from entering or leaving Afghanistan.

There was no indication the two incidents were linked.
