WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department called on Friday for the release of four captive oil workers, one of them an American, in the southern region of Nigeria.
Spokesman Sean McCormack said "this is a situation we are monitoring very closely" and that the U.S. consul-general in Lagos was working with Nigerian authorities and the Tidex and Royal Dutch Shell oil companies to secure the release of the American.
A British diplomat said Friday his country was pressing Nigeria not to use force to free the four foreign oil workers held captive in the petroleum-rich region.
