ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) - Days of violent street riots across Ivory Coast's government-held south, led by supporters of President Laurent Gbagbo, ended Friday.
Rebels still holding the cocoa-rich west African nation's north since a 2002-2003 civil war said the protests had been an attempt to topple a new transitional government that has sapped the president's powers.
"It was a well-planned coup d'etat, but it failed," Sidiki Konate, a rebel spokesman, said by telephone.
