Thousands of people thronged the race course in the suburb of Kenilworth, displaying beautiful outfits reflecting the theme of Afro-Chic, with high society gathering Saturday for the highlight of the local racing calendar and an annual fashion extravanganza highlighting the vibrancy of post-apartheid South Africa and the self-confidence of the new black middle class. (AP Photo/Obed Zilwa)CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - High society gathered Saturday for the J&B Met horse race, the highlight of the racing season and an annual fashion extravaganza highlighting the self-confidence of the new black middle class.

Thousands in beautifully cut outfits thronged the race course in the suburb of Kenilworth. More eyes focussed on the competition for Most Elegant Couple than on the purebreds thundering down the track in 10 afternoon races.
