SEATTLE (AP) - Just call her Chris. Washington state's governor, who has long been known in public life and news accounts as Christine Gregoire, would prefer that everyone use the more informal version of her first name.
The change, recently adopted by The Associated Press, has a tangled history in recent years, although Gregoire's aides say she has always preferred the shorter version.
"She goes by 'Chris,' not 'Christine,' in her everyday life," Holly Armstrong, Gregoire's communications director, said this week. "Calling her Christine would be like using 'William Jefferson Clinton' instead of Bill Clinton. `Christine' is just more formal. She says that's what her mother called her when she got in trouble."
