DAKAR, Senegal (AP) - Rebels in eastern Congo forced a local radio station off the air after a wave of fighting and looting in the troubled Central African nation, an international media watchdog group said Tuesday.
Separately, a U.S.-based human rights group urged Congolese authorities and U.N. peacekeepers to arrest renegade former army commander Laurent Nkunda, whose fighters were allegedly responsible for the recent outbreak of clashes in the area.
New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said Radiotelevision La Colombe, the only radio station in the small town of Rutshuru, shut down Sunday after rebels looted equipment and threatened reporters working there. Rebels also robbed a guesthouse housing journalists "who fled in fear of their lives."
