NEW YORK (AP) - The dollar rose versus the yen but slipped against the euro Thursday in muted trading ahead of the U.S. payrolls data.
The dollar was at 118.45 Japanese yen in late New York trading, up from 117.94 yen late Wednesday, after hitting a six-week high of 118.65 in part on speculation that Friday's U.S. non-farm payrolls data for January will come out stronger than initially expected.
An increase of 250,000 jobs is the median estimate of 23 economists surveyed Monday by Dow Jones Newswires and CNBC.
