SUVA, Fiji (AP) - A strong earthquake struck deep under the South Pacific near Fiji on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of injury or damage, officials said.
The magnitude-6.6 quake hit 370 miles below the earth's surface, too deep to cause a damaging tsunami, said Stuart Weinstein, the assistant director of the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The temblor shook about 1 a.m. Fiji time and was centered about 215 miles east of the Fijian capital, Suva, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
