NYC Mayor's Gifts Rarely Stay Anonymous

Since his election to public office in 2001, Bloomberg has maintained a rule of not discussing his philanthropy, which provides him a humble shield as well as a blanket policy to stay mum about his private life. But the world usually finds out where he's spreading his wealth, which also serves him politically. He has also given more than $500 million from his $5 billion personal fortune to hundreds of city organizations since 2001, including museums, community groups and parks. (AP Photo/Shiho Fukada)NEW YORK (AP) - When Johns Hopkins University officials announced they received an anonymous gift of $100 million, billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg's secret was safe for about four hours.

Last summer, when the Carnegie Corporation revealed that an anonymous donor had given $20 million to the philanthropic foundation, that mystery was also short-lived. Both trails led right to Bloomberg.

Since his election to public office in 2001, Bloomberg has maintained a rule of not discussing his philanthropy, which provides him a humble shield as well as a blanket policy to stay mum about his private life.
