DETROIT (AP) - City leaders are using the Super Bowl, and all the trouble fans had getting to the big game Sunday, to push for a new mass transit system.
Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said Monday he was lobbying state House Speaker Craig DeRoche to help bring a comprehensive transit system to the city, at the center of one of the nation's largest major metropolitan areas without one. Paying for it might not be so simple, though.
The city has a projected $40 million deficit for the current fiscal year, and state officials are expected to present another tight budget this week. City leaders hope the state and federal governments will come through with support.
