WATERTOWN, Wis. (AP) - Two cargo planes that collided in midair, sending one into a crash that killed its three-member crew, were on a final flight before leaving for duty in Iraq under a Defense Department contract, authorities said Monday.
Crew members in the two planes, which had been modified with larger fuel tanks to make the flight across the Atlantic Ocean, were taking pictures of each other when they collided about 5 p.m. Sunday.
The planes were flying parallel perhaps 150 feet apart at about 2,500 feet when the collision occurred, said Todd Fox, an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board. One aircraft turned and touched the other, which ended up crashing.
