SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - The state government wanted permission to remove an 11-year-old girl from life support about a week after she was hospitalized with brain injuries, according to a court document released Monday.
The state's highest court ruled last month that her stepfather who is charged with assaulting the girl had no say in her care, allowing the Department of Social Services to remove her from life support. A day later, she began showing signs of improvement and later began breathing on her own.
Although her doctors had said she would remain in her vegetative state, other neurologists and ethicists have said it can take a year to determine whether such a patient can recover.
