PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) - About 5,000 people burned effigies of the Danish prime minister in a northern Pakistan city in a protest against the publication of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in Western newspapers, police said.
The protesters chanted "Hang the man who insulted the prophet" and "God is great" as they rallied in a bazaar in Peshawar, capital of North West Frontier province. Most were bearded religious students wearing white prayer caps.
Protesters also burned an effigy of the cartoonist who drew the caricatures.
