Samsung Group to Offer $800M to Charity

Tuesday, February 07, 2006 10:07:59 AM
By JAE-SOON CHANG

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - South Korean conglomerate Samsung Group said Tuesday it would donate more than $800 million in corporate and private assets to charity as part of an apology for several recent scandals.

The announcement came just days after Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee returned from a five-month overseas stay that critics denounced as an attempt to evade investigation over a presidential campaign finance scandal that rocked the country last year.

"Samsung Group deeply repents for causing concern to the people," the conglomerate said in a statement posted on its Web site. "In order to comply with the views of society and the people, (the group) decided to offer 800 billion won worth of assets to society."
