Mittal Steel CEO Lakshmi Mittal continued a charm campaign aimed at garnering support for his unsolicited bid for Arcelor SA by meeting with the head of the European Parliament on Tuesday. (AP Photo/European Parliament) BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The European Parliament should discuss Mittal Steel Co.'s unsolicited 18.6 billion euros ($22.5 billion) bid for Luxembourg-based steelmaker Arcelor SA, the head of the Parliament said Tuesday after meeting with Mittal's CEO.

European Parliament President Josep Borrell said the Parliament should be a forum for major issues that affect the people and the economy of the European Union, even though it has no formal role in approving the offer.

"I intend, with the support of all the interested parties, to promote this debate at the heart of our institution in the coming weeks," he said. "I am mindful of this offer and sensitive to the social concerns of employees of a large European industrial group, Arcelor, which has close to 80,000 people in the EU."
