UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Islanders center Kevin Colley had surgery on his broken neck Tuesday for the second time in six days and will remain hospitalized for about a week.
Colley's playing status for this season and beyond is undetermined. For now, the 27-year-old player is out indefinitely. He broke the fifth cervical vertebrae in his neck but there is no paralysis.
Doctors stabilized Colley's spine from the back and removed the halo brace from his head and neck. He was operated on for four hours last Thursday in the first part of the two-step procedure, which decompressed his spinal cord and stabilized his spine from the front. The Islanders termed both operations a success.
