TURIN, Italy (AP) - The Olympic torch relay was diverted Wednesday for the second time this week because authorities feared that protests along the route could turn violent.
The torch was supposed to have passed through Avigliana, about 15 miles west of Turin. But TOROC said it diverted the relay to a stage between Buttigliera Alta and Rosta based on the recommendations of law enforcement agencies.
"In Avigliana, there were protests planned that could have become violent as has occurred in recent days placing the security of the torchbearers, the public and the staff involved at risk," the Turin organizing committee said in a statement.
