CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved Duke Energy Corp.'s planned $9 billion acquisition of Cincinnati-based Cinergy Corp., both companies said Wednesday.
Last May, Duke Energy agreed to buy Cinergy in a deal that will create a company with about 5.4 million customers and $70 billion in assets.
The acquisition still needs the approval of state regulators in North Carolina and Indiana. The deal, which will go before shareholders from both companies March 10, is expected to close in April.
