CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - Scott Niedermayer of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks withdrew from the Canadian hockey team for the Turin Olympics because he needs surgery on his right knee.
Niedermayer's agent told Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson of the decision Wednesday.
"After a discussion with team doctors yesterday, it was recommended I undergo surgery on my knee," Niedermayer said in a statement. "Representing Canada in international competition has always been a privilege I take very seriously, which made this decision extremely difficult."
