MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - Calming winds helped firefighters make progress Wednesday as they fought blazes in Southern California that have burned more than 7,200 acres of rugged land.
In the coastal mountains near Malibu, firefighters contained 95 percent of a 34-acre fire that caused three nearby elementary schools and a high school to close as a precaution.
The fire was sparked shortly before 5 a.m. by a burning sport utility vehicle parked on a dirt road. No homes were threatened.
