LOS ANGELES (AP) - The emergency use of racial segregation has almost completely ended at a 3,500-inmate jail where black and Hispanic inmates fought in a deadly riot two weeks ago, sheriff's officials said Thursday.
The North County Correctional Facility was about 85 percent reintegrated in a process that began Feb. 9, said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The rest of the jail will follow, dormitory by dormitory, as officials become convinced peace has been restored.
"We do this as tensions will allow," he said. "There are no guarantees, but so far, so good."
