Anheuser-Busch to Distribute Grolsch Beer

Tuesday, February 21, 2006 6:32:16 PM
By CHRISTOPHER LEONARD

August Busch IV, President, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. left, signs the agreement between Anheuser-Busch, Inc and Grolsch Brands as Ab J. Pasman, Chairman of the Executive Board, Royal Grolsch N.V. waits to sign his name during a news conference in St. Louis Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006. The agreement gives the Dutch brands access to Anheuser-Busch broad marketing and sales expertise and to its wide reaching U.S. Distribution network. Grolsch Premium Lager, the Dutch brewer's largest selling brand, is famous for its distinctive taste, iconic "swing top" bottle closure and green embossed bottle. The deal also includes the entire Grolsch brand line-up including the small, but growing Amber Ale, Grolsch Light Lager and Grolsch Lager. (AP Photo/James A. Finley)ST. LOUIS (AP) - Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. signed a deal Tuesday to be the sole U.S. distributor of Grolsch beer, a high-end European import.

The move comes as beer sales are flat in the United States, cutting into the profits of Anheuser-Busch, the nation's biggest brewer and maker of the Budweiser, Michelob and Bud Light brands.

Analysts have pushed Anheuser-Busch to enter the high-end import and micro-brew market, which has grown far faster than the traditional golden pilsner brands the St. Louis-based brewer helped popularize.
