PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A Marine recruit shouted frantically in the minutes before he drowned during basic training, but the training appeared safe, witnesses testified Tuesday at the opening of a water survival instructor's court-martial.
Staff Sgt. Nadya Lopez, 27, is charged with negligent homicide in the death of Jason Tharp, 19, who was in his fifth week of basic training when he died Feb. 8, 2005.
Chantell Higgins, who was a captain in the Marines but left the Corps last June, recalled seeing Lopez working with Tharp.
