BAEZA, Ecuador (AP) - About 3,000 protesters hurled rocks and dynamite Wednesday at police and soldiers trying to reach an oil pumping station, where demonstrators were holding 24 oil workers against their will.
The Sardinas pumping station on Ecuador's privately owned OCP heavy crude oil pipeline was seized by demonstrators late Tuesday, prompting President Alfredo Palacio to declare a state of emergency.
Civil liberties were suspended as authorities arrested a regional governor and local mayor who supported the protests.
