UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United Nations vowed Wednesday to pursue claims of financial waste and fraud in its peacekeeping missions worldwide, and argued for new rules that reflect the challenges of sending troops to some of the world's worst conflict zones.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan's chief of staff, Mark Malloch Brown, said a recent internal probe of peacekeeping procurement that found "substantial evidence of abuse" was disturbing and must be addressed.
But he said reports that over $300 million had been squandered were wrong, emphasizing that a significant amount of that money was still in the bank and that the extent of the wrongdoing, and a determination of whether it was intentional, were still under investigation.
