Japanese Stocks Higher; Dollar Lower

Wednesday, February 22, 2006 9:03:41 PM

TOKYO (AP) - Japan's benchmark stock index was higher at Thursday's open, boosted by earlier gains on Wall Street. The dollar was lower against the yen and euro.

The Nikkei 225 index opened Thursday up 127.09 points, or 0.81 percent, to 15,908.87 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The broad-based TOPIX index, which includes all issues on the exchange's first section, rose 11.80 points, or 0.73 percent, to 1,621.26.

A combination of moderate inflation and falling oil prices energized Wall Street Wednesday, sending stocks higher as investors grew optimistic about an end to the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes.
