GREENBELT, Md. (AP) - Two men accused of helping set fire to homes in a Washington suburb in 2004 committed an act that terrorized the community, prosecutors said Wednesday.
But defense attorneys said during opening statements that there is little evidence that Michael Everhart, 21, and Roy McCann, 23, were part of a group that set fire to two dozen homes at the Hunters Brooke development. The two are charged with arson and conspiracy.
Everhart admitted to investigators that he was present, but said he left before the fires were set, according to his attorney, William Brennan. McCann attorney Joshua Treem said McCann was asleep at his mother's house when the crimes were committed.
