BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - The European Union opened an in-depth antitrust probe Friday into mining company Inco Ltd.'s $11 billion planned purchase of Falconbridge Ltd., a deal that would create the world's largest nickel producer.
The European Commission said an initial market investigation found the merger of the Canadian companies would knock out the main alternative supplier on some nickel and cobalt markets.
"This would risk significantly reducing customer choice and likely lead to price increases," it said in a statement.
