UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United States said Friday it is pushing for quick approval of a U.N. peacekeeping force in Sudan's conflict-wracked Darfur region and wants backing from the African Union, whose troops are now deployed there.
State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli's comments followed U.S. Ambassador John Bolton's statement Thursday that he was pressing the Security Council to approve a resolution establishing a U.N. force by the end of February when the U.S. presidency of the council ends but faced opposition from the 14 other members.
Britain and several other council members said Friday there is support for a U.N. force, but they want to wait for the African Union which has agreed in principle to hand over peacekeeping to the U.N. to make a final decision at a meeting on March 3. African and Arab nations also want approval from the Sudanese government.
