NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - Police who raided a major Kenyan media group seized evidence of a threat to state security, Kenya's security minister said Friday, maintaining the materials justified the simultaneous raids on the printing press and broadcast center.
In a statement, John Michuki said the material seized on The Standard newspaper's printing press and the broadcast center of its sister Kenya Television Network contained "serious matters detrimental to the security of this country."
The raids Thursday marked the first time since independence in 1963 that a Kenyan government has shut down the operations of a major media company.
