UNITED NATIONS (AP) - The United Nations and the United States must keep up pressure on Sudan's government and rebel groups in Darfur to return to negotiations and stop violence in the troubled region, a U.S. congressional delegation said Tuesday.
The delegation, led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, visited Sudan last month and conveyed the "sense of urgency" of what they saw there to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan in a meeting at U.N. headquarters.
"The issue of Darfur challenges the conscience of our country, indeed of the world," Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters shortly after she and several other members of the delegation met Annan. "The violence must stop, the negotiations must begin and it must happen soon."
