Twins Salute Puckett at Spring Home

Wednesday, March 08, 2006 7:29:52 PM

A painted circle with Kirby Puckett's number adorns the grounds of Hammond Stadium as Twins players and fans observe a moment of silence prior to the Twins spring preseason baseball game Wednesday, March 8, 2006 against the Cincinnati Reds in Fort Myers, Fla. Puckett, who spent his entire career with the Twins, won two World Series and was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame, died Monday, following a stroke. (AP Photo/Jim Mone)FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - The Minnesota Twins paid tribute to Kirby Puckett when they played Wednesday at their spring training home for the first time since the Hall of Famer's death.

The grounds crew stenciled Puckett's retired uniform No. 34 in red in front of the third and first-base lines. Flags flew at half-staff, and players and fans observed a moment of silence before the Twins' 3-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

A Reds player touched the "34" just as he hopped out of the dugout.
