MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) - Liberia suspended its acting police chief because five Russian rape suspects left the country. Alfred Karlay, who has only held the post for two weeks, confirmed Tuesday night that he received a letter from the acting justice minister suspending him for a month.
The Russians, who were working for an aviation company contracted by the United Nations, are accused of taking two Liberian girls from a local nightclub and sexually assaulted them at the men's residence west of the capital, Monrovia, on Jan. 19, according to Asatu Bahkenneth, head of the police's women and children protection unit.
The men spent a night in police custody, then were released without being charged to a Liberian lawyer, who promised to return them for further investigation, Karlay said.
