ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast (AP) - The leader of rebels holding northern Ivory Coast officially joined a national unity government Wednesday, a rare concrete step in a peace process that repeatedly has failed to reunite the country.
Guillaume Soro of the rebel New Forces attended his first Cabinet meeting with President Laurent Gbagbo in the government-held city of Abidjan, Prime Minister Charles Konan Banny's office said. Soro is serving as minister of development for the world's top cocoa-producing nation.
The West African nation has been split between the government-controlled south and rebel-held north since a failed coup attempt in September 2002 sparked a civil war.
