COTONOU, Benin (AP) - The tiny, poor West African nation of Benin will hold a runoff presidential election between a former prime minister and a prominent economist, the government said Wednesday.
None of the 26 candidates in the March 5 election won the required 50 percent of the vote, according to final results released by the constitutional court. No new date was set for the runoff, but it is expected to be in the next few weeks.
Yayi Boni, an economist who previously ran the West African Development Bank, finished first with 36 percent of the vote. He faces former Prime Minister Adrien Houngbedji, according to constitutional court president Conceptia D. Ouinsou.
