Liberia Demands Handover of Ex-President

Liberia on March 17 2006 has asked Nigeria to hand over ex-President Charles Taylor, who is living in exile in Nigeria and is wanted on war crimes charges for his role in Sierra Leone's civil war, the Nigerian government said Friday.(AP Photo/Ben Curtis, File)ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - Liberia has asked Nigeria to hand over exiled former President Charles Taylor, who is wanted on war crimes charges, the Nigerian government said Friday.

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was credited with helping end Liberia's civil war when he helped arrange Taylor's asylum, is consulting with other African leaders on how to respond to the request from Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the presidency said in a statement.

"In keeping with his commitment to give due consideration to any formal request from a democratically elected government of Liberia for the return of former President Charles Taylor, President Olusegun Obasanjo has duly notified the chairmen of the African Union ... and the Economic Community of African States ... that President Johnson Sirleaf has made such a request."
