LONDON (AP) - The experimental drug that caused convulsions and organ failure in the first humans it was tested on only left monkeys with swollen glands, and there was nothing to predict the disastrous effects on people, the drug company's chief scientist said Tuesday.
The medical study on six previously healthy men has raised fresh questions over safety and whether volunteers have enough information to weigh the risks. Two men remained in a coma Tuesday and four others were seriously ill, but improving after participating in the trial last week.
"It felt like we stepped into some sort of horror film," Raste Khan, one of two men who were given placebos in the trial of TGN1412, a drug to treat leukemia and other ailments, told The Associated Press.
