DETROIT (AP) - Shares of General Motors Corp. rose more than 5 percent Tuesday amid expectations that the company could soon announce a deal with the United Auto Workers that would help avert a strike at Delphi Corp., its key supplier and former subsidiary.
GM shares rose $1.15, or 5.5 percent, to close at $22 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Meanwhile, GM and the UAW continued to negotiate an early retirement program that could be part of a plan to help Delphi restructure, GM spokesman Jerry Dubrowski said Tuesday. The three parties talked over the weekend and on Monday.
