NitroMed Execs Quit Without Explanation

BOSTON (AP) - Two top executives of NitroMed Inc., which won federal regulators' first clearance for a drug approved for use in a specific racial group, resigned Tuesday without explanation from the small drug company.

The move followed disappointing initial sales for the heart failure medication BiDil — which is approved for use only among self-identified blacks — and sent NitroMed shares more than 9 percent higher amid rumors that the 100-employee company could be a takeover target.

A news release from Lexington-based NitroMed did not say why CEO and President Michael Loberg and Chief Financial Officer Lawrence Bloch were stepping down.
