BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Argentina's naval chief said Tuesday he has ordered all in-country intelligence operations by the navy to be temporarily suspended while officials probe reports of spying at a Patagonian military base.
Defense Minister Nilda Garre had ordered the suspension after media reported allegations of illicit spying on officials, politicians and local journalists from the Admiral Zar naval air base.
Adm. Jorge Godoy, the naval chief, said inspectors will be sent to 11 naval intelligence centers to determine whether there were any other suspicions of espionage extending beyond the base, 950 miles south of the capital, Buenos Aires.
