KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Tuesday that the international community will work to keep peace during Congo's upcoming elections but that the country itself must arrange the vote and accept the results.
After years of wars and continuing violence in remote regions, Congo is trying to shift to democratic rule with elections in June the central African nation's first in 45 years.
"The Congolese people have an extraordinary opportunity to choose their destiny," Annan said of the scheduled elections. "Everyone must accept the rules of the game and everyone must accept the results."
