PARIS (AP) - The French government submitted a draft law to parliament Wednesday on how to deal with nuclear waste, angering environmental groups with proposed measures to bury radioactive refuse.
France is more dependent on nuclear energy than any other country and already has more than 1.05 million cubic meters (35 million cubic feet) of nuclear waste. France also has nuclear weapons, and imports waste from nuclear warheads and reactors in the United States and other countries for reprocessing.
Currently, 85 percent of France's radioactive waste is stored in two storage sites, one in the Manche region on the English Channel and the other in the Aube region southeast of Paris. The remaining 15 percent which includes the most highly radioactive materials are in temporary facilities around the country.
