Treasury Chief: Britain Economy Is Strong

Wednesday, March 22, 2006 2:42:02 PM
By JANE WARDELL

In this image from TV Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown delivers his budget speech in the House of Commons, in London, Wednesday, March 22, 2006. British Treasury chief Brown is likely to deliver a staid annual budget Wednesday, hamstrung by a slowing economy and speculation that the financial package will be his last before taking over as prime minister from Tony Blair, right. Economists said the twin political and economic concerns mean that Brown is unlikely to announce any unpopular rises in major taxes such as income tax or changes to spending plans in his 10th budget. (AP Photo / pa) LONDON (AP) - British Treasury chief Gordon Brown said the country's economy is growing, with inflation on target, as he presented his 10th annual budget Wednesday.

"The British economy is strong and strengthening," Brown told Parliament, as he unveiled a package that is being closely examined for clues to how Brown would act as prime minister — a job he is expected to take when Tony Blair steps down at a still unknown date.

Brown said that Britain's gross domestic product would grow by 2 percent to 2.5 percent in the coming year, and by 2.75 to 3.25 percent in 2007-8.
